The Truth About Rest They Never Tell You

You’ve been sold a lie about relaxation.

That picture of “self-care” – the bubble baths, the serene yoga poses, the perfectly curated gratitude journals – doesn’t just feel unattainable when you’re managing NDIS plans or caregiving duties. It actively makes you feel worse. Because when you can’t achieve that Instagram version of calm, you don’t just feel tired. You feel like you’re failing at rest too.

At Nurse Assist 24/7, we know real rest isn’t about performance. It’s about finding the cracks in your day where you can steal back moments of peace – not the picture-perfect kind, but the messy, real kind that actually fits your life.

Rest That Doesn’t Require You to Be Someone Else

James, one of our long-term participants, taught us this: His version of winding down isn’t meditation apps or spa days. It’s sitting in his backyard with a cup of tea (usually gone cold by the time he gets to it) and watching the magpies bicker. No purpose. No productivity. Just existing without an agenda for ten stolen minutes.

That’s the secret they don’t tell you: Real rest isn’t something you do. It’s something you stop doing.

For our support workers, it might look like:

  • Sitting in the car for an extra two minutes before going inside after a shift

  • Letting a client’s favorite playlist fill the silence during care routines instead of forcing conversation

  • Actually using those “short breaks” in the schedule – not to catch up on paperwork, but to stare blankly at a tree

The Permission You Didn’t Know You Needed

Here’s what we want you to take away today:

  1. Rest isn’t a reward for exhaustion. You don’t have to earn it by being tired enough.

  2. Small is sacred. Three conscious breaths while waiting for the kettle count as much as an hour-long massage.

  3. Your way isn’t wrong. If scrolling memes for 15 minutes resets you more than journaling? That’s valid.

Where Do We Go From Here?

This isn’t about adding another “should” to your list. It’s about noticing one moment this week where you can:

  • Pause without justification

  • Choose what actually replenishes you (not what looks good)

  • Release the guilt that hijacks your rest

Our team’s commitment? Helping you find and protect those moments – whether that’s through respite care, advocating for your needs, or simply being the person who reminds you: Your rest matters exactly as it is.
