Every October, World Mental Health Day reminds us to pause, reflect, and start the conversation. But here’s the truth — mental health isn’t a one-day topic. It’s an everyday practice, especially in the NDIS community, where carers, participants, and support workers pour from themselves daily.
In Perth and across WA, many people living with disability — and those supporting them — carry invisible weight. Some show up smiling. Some say, “I’m fine.” But their eyes tell a different story. Their shoulders carry stories that words never quite reach.
Mental health isn’t only about how we speak — it’s also about what we show. The tired glance. The quiet withdrawal. The sudden “I just need a moment.” These are cues worth listening to.
The message behind “Are you okay?” should go beyond the question itself; it’s about being okay enough to ask it and caring enough to mean it.
Wellness isn’t always a loud declaration.
Sometimes, it’s the small, silent act of taking a breath between shifts.
Turning your phone on silent. Letting yourself feel tired without guilt.
Or asking a colleague, “Need five minutes?” — and meaning it.
This week, we encourage our community — carers, participants, and professionals alike — to make every day a mental health check-in day.
Ask yourself:
-
“How am I feeling — really?”
-
“Who around me might be struggling quietly?”
-
“What does support look like right now?”
Because mental health doesn’t begin or end on October 10th. It continues in the small, consistent ways we care — for others and for ourselves.
At Nurse Assist 24/7, we believe in support that listens beyond words. Because sometimes, the loudest cries for help aren’t spoken — they’re felt.
